dismantled and gutted.
I forgot to mention some corrosion had built up on the bottom end of the central pin and I believe had become stuck open. I cleaned it and filed off a lip that had formed on the brass sleeve.
if you know where I can get the replacement centre let me know in the comments.
I have removed half of the lip holding the halves together to allow me to separate the halves.
