Valentine's Day - Holidays & Traditions - One Minute History
Описание
Valentine’s Day namesake, Saint Valentine of Rome, is believed to have been martyred. Some believe St. Valentine was beheaded for helping Christian couples wed. Although Pope Gelasius I questions his true identity, St. Valentine’s Day officially becomes a holiday. Poet Geoffrey Chaucer makes reference to the holiday being a special day for lovers. This inspires the Duke of Orleans to write a poem to his wife after being imprisoned, becoming the oldest known valentine to exist. By the mid-18th century, it is common for friends and lovers to exchange tokens of affection and handwritten notes. Esther Howland, the ‘Mother of Valentine’, is the first to mass produce valentines. Valentine’s Day is celebrated worldwide with over one hundred million roses and a billion cards sent every year... including a thousand sent to Verona, Italy; addressed to Shakespeare's Juliet.
