Music from The Shape of Water
Alexandre Desplat (arranged by Robert Longfield)

The soundtrack to Guillermo del Toro’s 2017 film The Shape of Water uses the sound of the flute extensively to capture the flowing movement of water. Many of the musical patterns in the music undulate like waves. Desplat, a flautist himself, wrote the score to reflect the love story of the film. The film’s protagonist, Elisa, forms a close bond with a humanoid amphibian being held captive in the secret government lab where Elisa works as a janitor.

This arrangement of music from the film opens with the inquisitive but melancholy ‘Elisa’s Theme’ and flows into the similar main theme of the film.

The film won numerous awards including the Academy Award for Best Original Score. Desplat’s other scores include Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003), The King's Speech (2010), and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) which also won an Academy Award.
