Best GIGANTIC flower sculptures at Bloemencorso Zundert festival

Sculptures created from unusual materials always have a great artistic effect that is why the Bloemencorso Zundert festival has turned into an international hit.

The festival started with a small flower parade, which took place back in 1936 and in honor of Queen Wilhelimina’s birthday. Even though the first flower art installations were based on decorated bicycles or farmer’s carts, the idea of creating decorated installations become extremely popular.

Over the years the technology of creating flower floats become more advanced (notwithstanding a short period of time during and after the WWII, when the flower industry almost collapsed), so the flower installations were becoming larger and larger.

In the 1980s the participants started to build floats, which were not safe enough, so the managers were forced to set maximum sizes: 19 m in length, 4.5 m in width and 9 m in height. So today the decoration of an average float takes from several thousand of dahlias to half a million flowers.

To every year dozens of contestants from Zundert’s village districts and surrounding church villages spend most of their summer to prepare to the festival, which takes place on the first Sunday of September.
