February 16: Shrove Tuesday

Today, we are going to think about a new season in the church year! We’ve already celebrated the Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany church seasons. Shrove Tuesday marks the end of Epiphany and the beginning of Lent. Shrove Tuesday has lots of names. In New Orleans it’s called Mardi Gras. In England it’s called Pancake Day. I bet other places have other names for this day too.

Lent is a time when God’s people think about all the things God and His Son, Jesus, did for them. Many Christians like to give up something during Lent. Giving up something reminds people of how much God does for each of us.

For hundreds of years people have been giving up rich foods during Lent. That’s why they made pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday when Lent begins. Pancakes are made with milk, butter or another kind of fat, and eggs. The people knew they wouldn’t be eating food made with those rich ingredients for the next 40 days. They didn’t want to waste the ingredients so they made pancakes to use up all the milk, butter, and eggs on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Many people still make pancakes for supper on Shrove Tuesday today.
