═══════════════════ 10 Fun Facts About China ═════════════════════
1. The World's First Paper Money was created in China over a thousand years ago. The idea of using a durable light-weight substance as evidence of a promise to pay a bearer on demand, originated in China during the Han Dynasty in 118 BC, and was made of leather. The first known banknotes were then developed in China during the Tang and Song dynasties, starting in the 7th century.
2. Despite China spanning five geographical time zones, the time in China follows a single standard time offset, which is eight hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. The official national standard time is called Beijing Time domestically and China Standard Time (CST) internationally. Because China merged these 5 time zones the sun rises as late as 10am in some places in China.
3. The Lotus Bridge, located about 8 km west of the Macau International Airport, connects mainland china with Macau. The bridge has an unusual arrangement as drivers in China drive on the right side of the road, where as in Macau they drive on the left side.
4. 1 in every 3 socks you have, were made in the district of Datang in Zhuji, China, now known as "Sock City".
5. Over 30,000,000 people in China live in cave homes, called yaodongs; because they are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Many of the cave dwellers find caves more desirable than concrete homes in the city.
6. Prior to June 30th 2014, it was a requirement that all cosmetic products sold domestically be animal tested. However a law was passed on June 30th 2014 removing the requirement for domestically used cosmetic products to be animal tested. Don't get this confused with banning animal testing. China made it a requirement that cosmetic products be animal tested and just removed that requirement, so animal testing is perfectly legal.
7. The first Internet Addiction Centre in China was established in 2004. China takes Internet Addiction very seriously and has classified it as a disease since 2008. There are now hundreds of these rehabilitation camps around China. These addiction centres are generally military run bootcamps that keep the teenagers far away from computers.
8. Dyeing pets to look like other wild animals has been a trend in China since the 2000's.
9. China has strict sentencing laws for white-collar crimes that many other countries take lightly, like fraud, corruption, or illegal fund raising. China has executed several white-collar criminals ranging from government officials to small business owners and even CEO's of large firms.
10. China is by far the least religious country in the world. In a recent poll, 61% of Chinese people claim to be convinced atheists, approximately twice as many as any other country in the world. A further 29% say that they are not religious and only just 7% of the population say they are religious. This is in large part due to the decades of Communist rule, which has instilled a widespread atheistic materialism that still surprises many visitors.
