Liwonde National Park, also known as Liwonde Wildlife Sanctuary, is a national park in southern Malawi, near the border with Mozambique. The park was established in 1973, and has been managed by the non-profit African Parks since August 2015.
Liwonde has about 12,000 species of large mammals, and more than 380 species of birds. Large mammals include the African buffalo, antelope (including common primates, endangered neckless antelope, and waterfish), baboons, black rhinoceros, antelope bush, elephant, hippopotamus, impala, kudu, monkey and hump. The park is home to dozens of species of herbivorous mammals, as well as crocodiles.
Liwonde has been very active in conservation efforts and animal movement programs. Since 1990, elephants, black rhinos, birds, scorpions, kudus, East African black antelopes, wild boars, water antelopes and zebras have been relocated to or from the national park. . In 2011, a survey of the park sponsored by the Wildeness Trust estimated there were 545 elephants, 506 buffaloes, 491 white deer, 3,159 water antelopes, 1,526 impalas, 1,269 African wild boar and 1,942 hippos. According to CNN, in 2017, there were about 800 elephants in Liwonde.

The African continent has the largest concentration of national parks in the world, with 335 national parks counted at the beginning of 2014. The park is home to more than 1,100 species of mammals, 100,000 species of insects, and 2,600 birds, 3,000 species of fish. In addition, Africa has hundreds of hunting-free zones, forest reserves, marine reserves, national reserves and nature parks.
