In this Marty Friedman guitar lesson, I’m going to give mostly tips to help someone who’s never dived into his work before, as well as give a few tips to those who are more experienced.
Marty’s Nuances – 3:14
How To Use The Hirajoshi Scale – 10:45
Substituting Arpeggios – 16:50
Progressions To Solo Over – 20:18
Marty’s Solos You Should Study & Learn – 27:40
Other Resources – 28:35
His style consists of many, many factors but the most important are a mixture of exotic scale patterns and note choices, odd rhythmic time applied to his licks, pentatonic scale licks, arpeggios, and his use of melody.
Marty’s style has been incomprehensible to many people though because they don’t have a firm understanding of the chord/scale relationship. Most guitarists will just learn a few pentatonic shapes and the basic chords.
There’s a lot more to that, and I take some time to show you ways to start thinking like him in this Marty Friedman Guitar Lesson.
A lot of what I’ve used in this lesson comes from his instructional videos like Exotic Metal Guitar and Melodic Control, as well as tabs of his solos from Rust In Peace.
I won’t cover every little thing he does here because that’ll be a fricking huge video. This is just to get started.
A few things I’d suggest to anyone who wants to use this video are that they.......
1) Know their fretboard as well as basic arpeggios and scale patterns
2) Have some understanding of rhythm, and preferably some practice with a metronome (although it’s not necessary)
3) And that they have patience!
This Marty Friedman Guitar Lesson is long because you can’t boil down one guitar player’s style to a few minutes. If you do, you’ll lose a lot of the richness of his style, as well as any other player’s style.
Later, I’ll put a little reference for where to go for technique I discuss, but in the meantime enjoy this and let me know if you have any questions in the comments.
