New 2023 Hyundai Kona - Hybrid Subcompact Crossover SUV

Hyundai has unveiled the second-generation Kona crossover, which has been radically redesigned and expanded in size to cement Hyundai's position in the competitive global crossover market.

The SUV has grown in length by 150 mm and width by 60 mm. It also has a longer wheelbase of 2,660 mm. The new Hyundai Kona SUV measures 1,580 mm tall with the new 17-inch wheels. New 19-inch wheels are also available.

Hyundai now offers exterior design styles that are distinct to each of the three available powertrain options. According to the manufacturer, the SUV was designed as an EV first and then incorporated elements to accommodate alternative powertrain options. To differentiate itself from its siblings, each powertrain receives a few stylistic features.

The SUV's overall appearance is larger and slightly more rounded than its predecessor. The once-sharp bonnet has softened and been adorned with a DRL strap that spans its width. In keeping with Kona's traditional styling, the main headlight unit is positioned lower on the bumper, but in this case, it is part of the broad, squared-off wheel arch that extends to the front. Furthermore, the electric model's light bar is pixelated to look like that of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The new Kona's side profile is similar to that of the Hyundai Tucson, with pronounced lines and creases on the bodywork.The rear of the SUV has a single LED strap that crosses the hood. The taillights, like the headlights, are housed within the lower body cladding of the SUV.

The EV-derived universal architecture allows for a sporty layout with a floating horizontal C-Pad to highlight the KONA's slim and wide interior, which provides versatile space for driver and passengers. The 12.3-inch dual wide displays and floating module give the impression of being high-tech. The use of ambient lighting improves the user experience and convenience.

According to the automaker, using a shift-by-wire gear selector has resulted in a more spacious front compartment with enough space to store large bags. The second-row Curve-less Bench Seat provides a one-of-a-kind experience that maximises usability, comfort, and convenience. With the rear seats folded, the boot storage now measures 723 litres. Another noteworthy change is that the cabin is now quieter than before, owing to additional sound-deadening material, double-laminated sound-insulating glass on the windscreen, thicker floor carpet, and sound-absorbing tyres.

The ICE variant is available to Korean customers with either a 1.6T-GDi or a 2.0L Atkinson engine. The 1.6T-GDi produces an estimated 198 horsepower and up to 265 Newton-meters of torque. Valve duration that is continuously variable regulates valve opening based on driving conditions. For maximum efficiency, the 2.0L engine produces an estimated 149 ps and up to 179.5 Nm of torque when paired with an Intelligent Variable Transmission.

The HEV variant available in Korea is powered by a specially calibrated 1.6-L GDi direct injection engine paired with an electric motor, delivering impressive acceleration and efficiency with a combined output of 141 ps and up to 265 Nm of torque.

In March, more information about the all-new KONA for global markets, including the EV, will be released.
