The Jefferson Davis memorial in Richmond, Virginia, was designed to uphold the ideals of the Confederacy and white supremacy. And now: It’s gone. The central statue was toppled by protesters in early June, and the city removed most of the rest of the memorial in July.

Critics argue that removing and destroying statues is a shameful attempt to erase the country’s history. But the destruction of our cultural legacies is itself part of our cultural legacy, reaching back to ancient history. It is as old as the act of honoring false gods.
