Asynchronous Programming in C#:
Asynchronous programming allows us to have efficient applications that do not waste resources when executed. In this article, we are going to discuss Asynchronous programming. We will look at concepts and patterns for developing effective asynchronous applications here. We will start by discussing async, await and how we avoid freezing the UI. In the next article, we will see the use of Task, which represents a promise of a method of execution that will end in the future. We will talk about how to report Task progress and cancel tasks, and we will also look at some asynchronous programming patterns.

Async and await works in any .NET development environment like Console applications, Windows Form applications, ASP.NET Core for Web development, Blazor for interactive web applications, etc.

Task in C#
In C#, when we have an asynchronous method, we generally want to return one of the following data types.
1. Task and Task of T
2. ValueTask and ValueTask of T
We will talk about ValueTask later; let us keep the focus on Task. The Task data type represents an asynchronous operation. A task is basically a “promise” that the operation to be performed will not necessarily be completed immediately but that it will be completed in the future.

What is the difference between Task and Task of T in C#?
Although we use both of them, i.e., Task and Task of T in C# for the return data type of an asynchronous method, the difference is that the Task is for methods that do not return a value while the Task of T is for methods that do return a value of type T where T can be of any data type, such as a string, an integer, and a class, etc. From basic C#, we know that a method that does not return a value is marked with a void. This is something to avoid in asynchronous methods. So, don’t use async void except for event handlers.

How to Return a Value from a Task in C#?
The .NET Framework also provides a generic version of the Task class, i.e., Task of T. Using this Task of T class, we can return data or values from a task. In Task of T, T represents the data type that you want to return due to the task. With Task of T, we represent an asynchronous method that will return something in the future. That something could be a string, a number, a class, etc.
