“ It’s Friday. Time for another weekly update. This week, we kicked off One Book Read City with assemblies at Shannondale and Fountain City elementary schools. Thanks to the support of many great sponsors, One Book Read City puts books into the hands of 30,000 pre-K and elementary school students. This year’s book is Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows. And don’t forget to log your reading hours as you follow Zoey’s adventures. I also welcomed the State 4-H Agents Association to Knox County, was on a panel to discuss infrastructure and roads at the West Knox Farragut Chamber’s breakfast speaker series and helped cut the ribbon at Tall Man’s Comics new location.

I’m thrilled that, thanks to changes in state law, Trustee Biggs and I will be taking a proposal before County Commission at this month’s Commission meeting that will provide a tax freeze for thousands of local senior citizen homeowners. To currently qualify for a tax freeze, the senior cannot make over $42,440 a year, a number that hasn’t been adjusted for inflation or updated since the program began in 2007. We are requesting Commission raise that amount to $60,000.

Big thanks to everyone who participated in the Spring Camporee at Melton Hill Park last weekend. We’ve received lots of positive feedback from that event. Speaking of Parks and Recreation, check out the Sunset Cinema series. This summer, Parks and Rec will be showing screenings of popular movies at our different parks. Activities begin at 7 p.m., with the screening starting at dusk. Please bring a blanket or lawn chair and snacks if you’d like to attend. You can fine more info on the parks & rec social media platforms. And next Saturday, May 13th, we’ll be kicking off our Second Saturday Concert series in Clayton and Concord Parks.

I am presenting the state of Knox County address, including the budget, this coming Monday at 11 a.m., in the Main Assembly Room at the City-County building. The address is open to the public.
