Who are the Old Believers? The old believers came about in reaction to Patriarch Nikon's reforms between 1653 and 1656. The patriarch had noticed several mistakes from the original Greek texts over the centuries and wanted to correct these. However, the old believers felt that Patriarchate Tikon was a heretic and the reforms outrageous. A significant portion of the population split churchwise, and persecution of the Old Believers would continue on and off until the 20th century. Nowadays, the Russian church and old believers do not consider each other heretics, and harmony exists.To get to the Old Believers church, I wound myself around some of the interesting side streets behind the city administration buildings near the Om River.
